Why strength training is essential for longevity (and how to do it right)

We often think about strength training in terms of aesthetics or athletic performance, like lifting heavier weights or building muscle. But the long-term benefits go far deeper than what you see in the mirror or on a watch screen.
A major study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine tracked over 147,000 adults for up to 30 years. The findings were clear: regular resistance training significantly increases your lifespan and protects your overall health.
What the research shows
Engaging in weekly strength training provided remarkable long-term health benefits compared to not lifting at all:
13% lower risk of all-cause mortality
19% lower risk of cardiovascular disease mortality
27% lower risk of death from neurological conditions (including dementia-related diseases)
The study also identified a practical sweet spot for training volume. You do not need to live in the gym for hours every day. The greatest longevity benefits occurred at 90 to 120 minutes of strength training per week (two 45-minute sessions or three 30-minute sessions).
Oddly enough, we host 45-minute group classes every Monday/Tuesday and Wednesday/Thursday. Total coincidence, obviously. 😉
When combined with regular aerobic exercise like running, cycling, or walking, the overall risk of premature death dropped dramatically.
