Why Your Legs Feel Flat: The Science of Muscle Tone

Every runner knows the frustration of feeling completely flat on race day despite putting in months of hard work. You hit your split targets, you nailed your long runs, and yet the "pop" in your legs simply vanished.


This frustration was actually a huge turning point for me. When I first read coach and sports scientist Steve Magness's book, The Science of Running, things finally began to click. Magness explains that every athlete has a unique muscle archetype. Our muscle fiber types and nervous systems dictate how we generate tone, as well as the specific training styles we respond to best. It’s the primary reason training must always be individualized for the athlete.


So why do so many runners still end up feeling flat? According to legendary Norwegian runner and sports physician Marius Bakken, the missing piece in most training plans isn't a lack of fitness it’s an inability to manage muscle tone.


Understanding how to control, manipulate, and respect muscle tone is the key to unlocking repeatable performances without burning out or getting injured. Here is a breakdown of the core insights from Bakken's approach to training load, elasticity, and recovery.

What Is Muscle Tone (And Why It Matters)


Muscle tone isn't about appearance. It's the balance of tension, elasticity, and stiffness in your muscles. It is driven by two sources:


  • Extrinsic (CNS): Central nervous system fatigue and neuromuscular tension from high-intensity work.

  • Intrinsic (Structure): Passive muscle forces, fluid levels, and elastic proteins like titin.

Key Concept: High-intensity work yields fast gains, but it is unpredictable. Sub-threshold training lets you stack large volumes of work while keeping muscle tone completely under control.

The "Rubber Band" Effect & Flying


Think of your muscles like a rubber band: you need enough stiffness to spring off the ground efficiently, but too much stiffness leaves you tight, flat, and vulnerable to strain.

Consider stepping off a long flight, your legs feel like lead because sitting causes high passive stiffness with almost zero elasticity. This is why Marius Bakken never flew the day before a race. He flew two days out, ran a predictable sub-threshold workout to restore elasticity, took a light recovery day, and had optimal "pop" on race day.


3 Rules for Managing Tone


  1. Keep Easy Days Easy: Easy runs must bring tone down. Keep them under 50 minutes, totally relaxed, and strictly under 70% Max HR.

  2. Ditch the Ego Mindset: Workouts aren't pass/fail tests. Bakken constantly adjusted reps and rest mid-session based on feel. The goal isn't executing a piece of paper, it's triggering adaptation without blowing out your recovery window.

  3. Pleasently Uncomfortable: You don't need to hit a precise pace on threshold days. Running slightly conservative allows you to stack more overall volume with far less neuromuscular fatigue. Tapering: Keeping the "Pop" Before Race Day


  • Maintain Frequency: Muscle tone loves routine. Dropping running days too drastically makes your system feel sluggish.

  • Limit Speedwork If You Feel "Off": Adding high-velocity speed work to tight, inelastic muscles is a fast track to a strain.

  • Smart Pre-Race Timing: A solid template is a heavy workout 4 days out, a sub-threshold touch-point 2 days out, and a light shakeout the day before.

  1. Start Sub-Threshold: Base interval days around controlled sub-threshold efforts. A favorite starting point is 12 x 1 min on/off, gradually extending rep length to 2–6 minutes while keeping overall work volume similar (a classic Canova-style extension of quality).

  3. Add One Variable at a Time: Introduce a single stimulus (like hill sprints) and monitor recovery for 2 weeks before adding more.

  4. Listen to the Triangulation: If your muscle stiffness signals high fatigue, adjust the workout. Never sacrifice recovery for ego.


Is Your Training Load Working Against You?


Balancing volume, intensity, and muscle elasticity is a fine art. If you are constantly hitting walls, dealing with mysterious niggles, or feeling flat when you should feel fresh, your underlying movement quality and load tolerance might be out of sync.
